Early in my manager career, I announced in a meeting my deep dislike for a plastic pink flamingo. It represented to me countless hours debating what was appropriate and inappropriate for any given community.
I have seen lawn ornaments regulated by size, color, and material. Still, I have seen tacky all the way to downright offensive lawn ornaments of appropriate size, color and material. All I can say is that the manager should never enter the debate.
Boards and/or committees should set a rule and/or policy and allow the manager to enforce. The Board should hear anyone wishing to go outside of the rule.
As soon as I expressed my own dislike for the pink flamingo, purple flamingos popped up in the community. It was the best reminder ever to keep my aesthetic and opinion to myself.
I am working through my dislike of pink flamingos and have recently “Flocked” the office for a good cause – read more here.
How often do you monitor lawn ornaments? Have you found any personally offensive?
