We work in insurance, and spend a lot of time thinking about the things that can go wrong.
And that’s important work. Insurance exists because sometimes life doesn’t go according to plan. Helping people prepare for those possibilities—and being there when something does go wrong—is a big part of what makes insurance meaningful.
But every once in a while, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at the other side of the story.
The insurance industry does a LOT of good.
According to the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s latest Philanthropic Giving Index, 100 leading insurance organizations collectively contributed $1.53 billion to charitable causes in 2024—a 16.5% increase over the previous year.
And they didn’t stop at writing checks.
Nearly 595,000 insurance professionals volunteered almost 7 million hours to help communities and nonprofit organizations.
Seven million hours.
That’s a pretty staggering number.
Those hours represent real people doing real things in their communities. Insurance professionals are mentoring students, supporting veterans, helping children and families, serving meals to the hungry, cleaning up neighborhoods, raising money for local nonprofits and lending a hand when their communities need it.
And that’s something we think is worth celebrating.
Insurance Is About People
At its heart, insurance is a pretty remarkable idea.
A large group of people pools their resources so that when one person experiences a devastating loss, that person doesn’t have to face it alone.
That’s the practical side of insurance. But there’s another side, too.
The people who work in insurance don’t just show up when there’s a claim. We live in the same communities as our clients. Our kids go to the same schools. We volunteer with the same organizations. We serve on boards, coach teams, attend community events and pitch in when there’s work to be done. We show up everywhere, all the time.
Choosing Optimism
Insurance professionals probably have a tendency to think of worst-case scenarios—it’s our business to outthink bad stuff and prepare for whatever might happen.
But preparing for the worst doesn’t mean we have to focus on the worst.
We can also choose to notice the good.
The millions of hours people are volunteering. The organizations being supported. The communities being strengthened. The young people being mentored. The neighbors helping neighbors.
At Deeley Insurance Group, we’re proud to be part of an industry that does that. We’re even prouder to be part of an agency where giving back to our local community and being involved are such important parts of who we are.
Because insurance isn’t just about being there when something goes wrong.
Sometimes, it’s about showing up when things are going right, too. 💚💙
