FLOOD MAP RECAP FROM 2012-2015
In 2012, a new law intended to strengthen the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was passed. The law, known as the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, extended the NFIP for five years, while requiring significant program reform. It made several changes to the way flood insurance premiums are calculated.
In March 2014, Congress passed The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014. This new law delays and alters implementation of several Biggert-Waters provisions. The law also creates a possible future surcharge to all new and renewed policies. Residential Condominium Building Association Policies may receive a $250 charge per policy year.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is updating flood hazard maps throughout the country to reflect current flood risk. These maps are used to identify a property’s flood zone or risk. FEMA maps have been updated and are in the approval process for most of the Delmarva communities. Each community is reviewing and implementing the maps in the next year and a half. Ocean City is hopeful that the maps will be implemented by May of 2015. The Ocean City maps reeflect a general lowering of risk for most properties.
