On Thursday, October 17, 2019, the Bethany Fenwick Chamber of Commerce hosted an educational seminar, “Building a Resilient Business.” Edward Lewandowski from the University of Delaware spoke about the Delaware Sustainable Coastal Community (SCC) initiative.
The SCC initiative delivers science-based information to aid decision makers in the following areas:
- Health of coastal economies, including tourism.
- Efficient use of coastal land, energy and water resources in our communities.
- Balance of relationships between social, economic and environmental values.
Although the community should prepare for numerous types of risks that may affect Sussex County, the presenters pointed out that flooding and storms are the most likely risks to be faced in the area.
To help with the development of strategies, the University of Delaware and the Delaware Sea Grant College Program collaborated to provide communities with the Coastal Delaware Resiliency Report. The first step to resilience planning is to educate the tourism industry on climate change, beach erosion and flood risks.
