After being quarantined for months, we’re excited to get out, get moving, and enjoy the Summer. While you’re on the go, watch out for these common seasonal risks that often lead to insurance claims.
Lawn Mowers
- Children younger than 16 years old should not operate ride-on mowers.
- Children younger than 12 years old should not use walk-behind mowers.
ATVs/Off-Road Vehicles
- Children who are too young to have a driver’s license should not be allowed to operate or ride off-road vehicles.
Bikes/Scooters/Skateboards
- Bikes and Scooters – Always wear a helmet, no matter how short the ride or how close to home. Injuries can happen in driveways, on sidewalks, in the street or bike paths.
- Skateboards – Wear protective gear, especially helmets. Make sure the skateboarding gear meets the ASTM or other approved safety standards.
Fireworks
- Avoid using fireworks at home. Attend community fireworks displays run by professionals.
Teen Driving
- Parents, talk with teens early and often about driving behavior. Avoid speeding, impairment and distracted driving while behind the wheel.
- Adults, be sure to set a positive example with behaviors – no eating, grooming or checking your phone.
- Establish a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers.
- Conduct at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving.
Travel
- Before going away, ask the post office to hold your mail. This will prevent thieves from noticing you’re away.
Summer is a time for fun, and you’ve earned it! Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay aware of these claim risks. A few simple precautions will help keep your family safe this season.
