Individual states have begun to alter their laws about marijuana use. This has a huge impact on the transportation industry.
Marijuana is processed through the body differently than alcohol. Testing for the two substances are also very different. Marijuana can be detected in urine for up to 4 weeks to leave the body. Saliva testing can be used roadside to test for active usage.
Zurich insurance highlights these two crucial points:
- Operators of commercial motor vehicles on U.S. roads and who cross state borders are regulated by Federal laws where marijuana use is illegal.
- Impaired driving is illegal across the U.S., regardless of the legality of the drug (including alcohol) causing the impairment.
Zurich has written this great article explaining the issues being raised by this complex issue.
Deeley Insurance Group and the insurance carriers that we represent continue to be concerned about the safety of all drivers on the road, but especially those who make it their living.
Are you concerned that the new state laws will make the highways less safe?
