Warmer weather is here, which means motorcycles are out and about! The National Safety Council is reminding riders and drivers to do their part on the road.
Drivers – The majority of vehicles on the road are not motorcycles. These vehicles often violate the motorcyclists’ right of way due to various reasons.
- Motorcycles are relatively small & drivers don’t see them
- Drivers don’t anticipate motorcycle’s movements
- The driver’s view is obstructed, often by blind spots or other vehicles
- The driver is distracted
Riders – Operating skills and protective gear are crucial while riding your motorcycle. NSC suggests the following tips to protect yourself.
- Wear a full coverage helmet
- Choose a bike that fits you
- Know the rules of the road
- Never drink and ride
- Drive defensively, especially at intersections
- Use headlights day and night
- Wear bright and/or reflective clothing
- Assume you are invisible to other motorists and position yourself to be seen
- Don’t weave in and out of lanes, or ride on the shoulder or in between lanes
- Watch for hazards like potholes, manhole covers, oil slicks, puddles, debris, railroad tracks & gravel
