With summer right around the corner, May is a great time to think about Protecting Your Family. One way to protect your family is by gaining awareness
about Preventable Diseases. This month Deeley Insurance Group would like to help you Protect Your Family by sharing relevant information on
Melanoma, Lyme disease, Diabetes, Strokes & Heart Attacks.
Melanoma awareness is very important to our agency. Our agency President, Laura Deeley Bren, found melanoma on her skin in 2010. She found her spot early
and had it promptly removed. Laura gets frequent skin checks and shares her Melanoma protection tips with family, friends and Deeley Insurance Group clients.Check out her tips below.
Laura’s tips for protecting yourself & your family:
- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more. Make it a part of your morning routine. Be sure to reapply every 2 hours if you are going to be
active outdoors. “Broad-spectrum” sunscreen provides protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. - Seek shade mid-day. Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Go to the beach in the morning and leave by lunch or get a late
afternoon start and stay through dinner. It’s a mindset shift. Be aware of how you may be able to be in the shade even when you are active outdoors. - Cover up whenever possible. Throw on a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. It’s actually cooler.
- Make your own clothes sun-safe. Use products like SunGuard to wash SPF into your existing clothes. It is a great alternative to pricey sun smart
clothing. Its $2 a box and lasts for 20 washings. I will wash my family’s clothes at the beginning of the season. A white cotton tee shirt has an SPF of 5;
SunGuard increases the SPF to 30. - Try a self-tanning product. If you just want to have a little color, this is a nice temporary way to achieve it. Don’t forget to exfoliate; it’s hard to
look classy with orange elbows and knees. - Don’t use tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from tanning beds increases your risk of developing melanoma by 74 percent. It’s not worth it.
- Know your skin. I found my melanoma. If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist. Skin cancer is very
treatable when caught early.
