The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently delayed the compliance dates for part of its medical examiner’s certification integration rule until June 22, 2021. The rule will allow for the electronic transfer of medical examiners’ certificates between the FMCSA, state licensing agencies and the commercial driver’s license information system in an effort to streamline the driver onboarding and recordkeeping processes.
According to the FMCSA, the delay will help the agency develop IT system tasks for its National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and provide state licensing agencies enough time to make necessary changes. Until then, carriers should continue to verify that all drivers hold a valid medical certification from an examiner listed in the National Registry.
