The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. It’s time to review your insurance coverages to ensure you’re protected financially against hurricane-related losses.
Here are five things to consider:
- Don’t wait until it’s too late—Check your insurance policies well before the storm to see what is and is not covered.
- Know your flood risk—Visit floodsmart.gov to learn about your area’s flood risk and flood insurance options.
- Secure flood insurance in advance—Make sure you have flood insurance, as flooding is the leading cause of damage from tropical systems, and once purchased, flood insurance does not take effect for 30 days. So don’t wait until a storm is approaching to buy flood insurance!
- Prepare before the storm—Prepare your home and vehicles according to your specific insurance policies to ensure that damages are covered. For example, your policy may require you to board up your home’s windows ahead of a storm or store your vehicle indoors to be able to file claims for damages.
- Make sure your insurance information is accessible—Know where your insurance documents and contact information are located. Take them with you if you evacuate.
