In the insurance world – knowing a few great surveyors can be helpful. Especially, if you need an elevation certificate.
The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) requires an elevation certificate for buildings that are located in the Special Flood Hazard Area. Per FEMA, A community's permit file must have an official record that shows new buildings and substantial improvements in all identified Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs)are properly elevated. This elevation information is needed to show compliance with the floodplain management ordinance. FEMA encourages communities to use the Elevation Certificate developed by FEMA to fulfill this requirement since it also can be used by the property owner to obtain flood insurance. Communities participating in the Community Rating System (CRS) are required to use the FEMA Elevation Certificate.
Sometimes older buildings that were built before mapping in a community (PRE-FIRM) can benefit from getting an elevation certificate completed. This step could save them money on flood insurance premiums if the building was elevated or properly vented.
You can find a blank elevation certificate here.
If you know a local surveyor – wish them a Happy National Surveyors Week!
You will often see surveyors on the side of the road, please slow down and use caution when you see them. Try not to run over them!
