In first grade, my teacher was Snow White. We called her Mrs. Jones and she taught at Showell Elementary School. I knew her secret. The long black hair, pale skin and red lipstick were my first hints. Her lilting high voice was another sign. However, it was when she pinned that construction paper apple with the word GOOD on it to my shirt that I really knew, she was Snow White in disguise.
I learned a lot in first grade, and some of my friends still recall the movie we made for the Film Festival called “The Rotten Egg.” I narrated that film and pronounced our lovely state – Mary Land.
I had the pleasure of seeing Mrs. Jones years later at the same school. She served as my sons first Principal and continued to make our public school grow and shine. I wish I had a real picture of her back then… so many years ago.
Thank you to all the teachers who touch our lives every day. I believe you are all mythical creatures who come in to our lives and care for us. You teach us so much more than reading and writing. Who was your favorite teacher? What memories do you carry with you from that time in your life?
Thanks for reading. If you see Mrs. Paula Jones out there… tell her I said Hi!
