Technology companies frequently possess the personally identifiable information of people, including, for example, that of their customers, employees, and vendors. This non-public personal information may uniquely identify a person and exist in the form of a person’s first and last name in combination with one or more of the following:
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Credit card number(s)
- Financial account access information (e.g. PINs)
Data privacy laws enacted by many states require companies to protect this personal information and impose notification requirements, as well as possible fines in the event this information is not secured by the company responsible for the information.
