The Department of Transportation is now collaborating with 18 automakers to explore new ideas and ways to promote road safety.
The goal would be to reduce the number of recalls and lower the number of congressional hearings and law suits involving around the automotive industry. The automakers will be sharing traffic and safety data to help reduce crashes and minimize manufacturing defects. The industry will work together for the betterment of the consumer.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a similar collaboration called the Safety Management System. Airlines anonymously share data that can help improve safety. The program has been so successful that the DOT thinks a similar collaboration will have great results for the auto industry.
Self-driving car guidelines will be produced over the next ten years by the Department of Transportation.
