In September 2004, I visited my
gynecologist, just like I always did every year.
We had our normal discussion and
on this particular visit she said to me, “ I normally wait until my patients
are 40 before I send them for their first mammogram. However, since
your mother is a breast cancer survivor, why don’t we go ahead and send you
now. Just to be safe.”
Of course, I was thinking well,
I am only 37 years old, I am too young to get breast cancer.
So, I did exactly what my doctor asked me to do. I thank God every day
for her, as on October 5, 2004, I received the news no woman would ever want to
hear… “you have breast cancer”.
At that moment, I had all kinds
of thoughts running through my mind. I am a mother of 3, a teen daughter,
and 5 year old twins. This couldn’t be happening. After
crying my eyes out, I then called my husband, went and visited my Pastor and we
prayed together. A week later, I had my surgery and did 6 weeks of
radiation. I am so proud and thankful to say I am 11 year
SURVIVOR!
I encourage every woman to
please get your yearly mammograms and do the monthly self-
examinations. The two are so very important!
Thankful for being cancer-free.
