The three big reasons behind most residential fires are:
1. Electrical
2. Smoking
3. Cooking
As a homeowner, you probably have already taken some simple steps to avoid fires caused by smoking and cooking. The most important of these steps are not smoking in bed and keeping a fire extinguisher close at hand while cooking.
What can you as a homeowner do to stop electrical fires? LOTS!
1. All appliances that draw electric that need installation should be installed by a licensed electrician. Electric panels in older buildings were not expecting the sheer number of appliances (small and large) used today.
2. Check the electrical draw of appliances prior to purchase.
3. Do not plug in an extension cord in to a power strip or another extension cord.
4. When using a power strip use a smart strip that signifies after it has taken a surge and needs replacement.
5. Do not use small electrical heaters as a supplemental heat source.
6. Limit the number of items you keep plugged in. Coffee makers, coffee pots, cell phone chargers etc. can be unplugged when not in use.
If you live in a community association, you should contact management prior to any additions or changes that would impact the electric of the unit or the building.
