The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing ALL smoke alarms in your home every 10 years!
When was the last time you replaced your smoke detector, not just the battery, the entire smoke detector?
Daylight savings time is a good reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detector. However, have you ever replaced them? Good housekeeping would require you to test the smoke detectors for operation on a monthly basis, change the batteries once a year and replace them every 10 years or per the manufacturer’s recommendation. Most manufacturers are now providing an expiration date on the back side of the smoke detector.
Per the NFPA, three of every five fire related deaths in homes did not have working smoke detectors.
Simple tips:
- Change the battery in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector twice a year.
- Test the smoke and carbon monoxide detector monthly.
- Change out the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years.
- When you hear the alarm – go outside and call 911 and teach your children to do the same!
