The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) used GPS and Federal Highway Administration data to determine that the trucking industry experienced over 990 million hours of traffic delays in 2015. These delays added up to over $63 billion in lost revenue, an increase of over $13 billion in lost revenue from the year before.
The ATRI attributed the increase in traffic delays to the increase in overall crashes, police-reported crashes and severe weather events. Additionally, the data showed that over 90 percent of the nation’s congestion costs came from metropolitan areas.
