The Polar Vortex of 2014 was the 2nd costliest winter storm on record causing $1.7 billion in insured losses according to Property Claims
Service.
This week the snow storm missed us and we woke bright and early on Tuesday, January 27th to schools on time and roads clear of ice. Again, we
got lucky.
Last January we were not as lucky and our claims department handled over seventy freeze claims for our insureds in the winter of 2013/14.
Residential homes, condominiums and businesses all struggled with the after math of frozen pipes. In our second home communities some of the damages were
not even discovered for weeks or months.
Throughout the spring and summer repairs ensued and claims were finalized. Now it is time for us to look back and get some best practices from that storm.
Some of our clients put these actions in place.
- Heat checks for units to make sure the heat was on and operating
- Water shut off valves checked for operation
- Insulation added over pipes in attics
- Emergency plans given to homeowners on how to file a claim.
Thanks for reading. What precautions have you taken to protect your property from another polar vortex? What can we do to help you be prepared?
