According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults loose body heat more quickly than younger adults. With this in mind, read these tips for staying warm as an older adult this winter.
- Keep your house or apartment heated to 68 degrees or higher. You can close off all rooms that are not in use to save on heating costs.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed to prevent heat from leaking out of your windows.
- Even if you are staying at home, dress warmly when a cold front comes. Be sure to keep your feet warm by wearing socks and slippers. Keep a blanket handy for when you get chilly.
- When getting ready for bed, grab an extra blanket and wear extra layers. You can even wear a cap to keep your head warm.
- Be sure to eat enough! Body fat helps you stay warm during the winter months.
- Be wise about how much alcohol you are consuming. Alcoholic drinks can make you lose body heat.
- Ask friends, family or neighbors to check on you throughout the winter season. If your home looses heat for any reason, try to find somewhere warm to stay.
