We are in the midst of the holiday season with Thanksgiving just around the corner! One our favorite parts of the holidays is the delicious food, but did you know that according to the U.S. Fire Administration, the most common cause of house fires is cooking? FEMA shared some great tips for keeping your family safe this Thanksgiving, and we'd like to pass them along to you:
- Before you begin cooking, click the 'Test' button on all of your smoke alarms to be sure they are in working condition.
- Before you turn on your burners or stove-top, be sure to clear away anything that may catch fire – recipe cards, hand towels, oven mitts, etc.
- Do not leave burners on if you walk out of the kitchen.
- Stay alert while cooking! It only takes a moment for a pot to begin boiling and spilling over the sides, or for a grease fire to erupt.
- Remind kids to stay away from the stove so they are not in danger.
- Use timers to remember when to check any food that is simmering, baking or roasting.
- Keep a baking sheet close by while you are cooking. It can be used to cover a pan if it catches on fire.
- If something catches on fire in the oven, turn off the oven and leave the door shut until the fire subsides and the oven has cooled down.
We hope you have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving day!
