A study conducted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that collision avoidance systems (CASs) can reduce the number of collisions, a claim that’s garnering widespread support from industry stakeholders.
The study examined 6,000 CAS activations, culled from over 3 million miles of driving data. These CASs either provided impact alerts (IAs) to drivers, or, in the case of more serious threats, engaged automatic emergency braking (AEB).
Overall, the study found CASs reduced rear-end collisions by as much as 89 percent, and CAS developers hope to reduce those collisions even further as the technology improves.
