The frequency and severity of professional liability claims are on the rise, according to a Zurich study of the health care industry. Researchers identified a strong upward trend in the severity of professional liability claims. Between 2002 and 2008, severity rates climbed an average of 6.3 percent per year. These results are troubling for the health care industry, especially when coupled with widespread predictions that insurance rates may be rising in 2012, and provide even more impetus for health care organizations to continue working diligently to reduce claims.
