New Hours-of-Service Rules Effective July 1, 2013. The Hours of Service Final Rule, published December 27, 2011, finally takes effect July 1. It retains the current 11-hour daily driving limit, but implements some major changes including:
- Prohibited driving if more than eight consecutive hours have passed since the last off-duty period of at least 30 minutes.
- Revisions to the “34-hour restart” provision that allows drivers to restart the clock on their work week by taking at least 34 consecutive hours off-duty.
- Penalties can reach $11,000 per offense, and the drivers themselves could face civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense.
